Episode 31

WITS chats 'Good Omens' S3 | dir. Rachel Talalay | 2026

Rebecca and Tori chat 'Good Omens' season 3, the final episode. It's a bit of a mixed bag for us. There are elements we enjoyed and other things not so much. Nonetheless, Michael Sheen and David Tennant shine.

Welcome to Wallowing in the Shallows, the podcast that skirts the perilous drop-off of a

deep dive into television and movies.

2

:

Today on Wallowing in the Shallows.

3

:

He was very naive and innocent, like very childlike.

4

:

And then it was just like snap.

5

:

He was he had gotten it back, right?

6

:

Like, I know what I'm supposed to say, I know what I can do now.

7

:

This has got its groove back.

8

:

Yes, that was great.

9

:

I think I laughed harder at that comment than I did most of this episode.

10

:

Yeah.

11

:

Hey hello peeps, welcome to Wallowing in the Shallows.

12

:

This is Tori.

13

:

And this is Rebecca.

14

:

We are academic nerds aspiring to become TV and movie geeks.

15

:

There are no spoiler guards in the shallows, so listen at your own risk.

16

:

Today we are wrapping up the series Good Omens.

17

:

Season three dropped and it is one one and a half hour episode and we are here to talk

about it.

18

:

I was a little hesitant going in since it was only gonna be ninety minutes.

19

:

And I think it did suffer from that.

20

:

Definitely.

21

:

Because it was just

22

:

Too fast, right?

23

:

Way too fast.

24

:

They dumped some new characters in on us and I think they were interesting enough, but we

didn't really get a chance to know any of them because it was just 90 minutes.

25

:

So I think that really cheated us.

26

:

Cheated.

27

:

Even though I have to admit I I enjoyed it, but in comparison to the previous two seasons,

it's it's

28

:

A fail in my book compared to the other two seasons.

29

:

Yeah, I hate to say it, but I completely agree.

30

:

I love where it ended up.

31

:

Yes.

32

:

Okay.

33

:

So I am so glad we got this episode and they didn't just leave us hanging at the end of

season two.

34

:

And I did I did like the ending.

35

:

The very, very, very ending.

36

:

I don't know about how we got there, but

37

:

I loved, loved, loved the very, very ending.

38

:

And so for that alone, for the last two scenes alone, I would say I am grateful for them

going ahead and giving us this cap off.

39

:

And there were some delightful highs.

40

:

I mean, there really were some moments, but I loved this series so much that this was

just.

41

:

disappointing in that yes, I just felt robbed of the time, the depth, the it you know,

when I know this is jumping right into the middle of things, but when like everybody

42

:

figures out it's Michael R at the same exact time, you know, there's just no development,

no oh yeah, it's Michael.

43

:

yeah, I knew it was Michael.

44

:

yeah, I I knew it was Michael as well.

45

:

Yeah, yeah.

46

:

Yeah.

47

:

It was almost like

48

:

Trying to figure out how to say this.

49

:

It was almost like they're they were telling a story.

50

:

This is what I write down for my students quite a bit.

51

:

I'm like, so you said this thing, but you haven't given me any details to really

understand.

52

:

You haven't given me the details to make me know that you understand what you're talking

about.

53

:

and understand where everything's going and so forth.

54

:

I felt a little bit like that with this episode 'cause it was just like BAM.

55

:

You know, do you remember when you were a kid, did you ever get those strips of like

little firecracker things?

56

:

It was like a strip and you'd bang it with something and it would pop.

57

:

Hmm I don't think so.

58

:

These were cool, you missed out, man.

59

:

They were just like these really long strips and it looked like there were just little

dots all along it and you could just go pop and it would go pop.

60

:

Of course, you know, something very safe for children to play with.

61

:

Naturally.

62

:

It kind of reminded me of that.

63

:

It was just like boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.

64

:

Here's the stuff.

65

:

And I mean, this story is a it's one of the great things about this story has been the

details.

66

:

100%.

67

:

That's and that's what we have spent a bunch of time digging into are the details.

68

:

And yes, I I think that's really well said.

69

:

It reminded me of the first time I saw the first Harry Potter movie after reading the

book.

70

:

And I was like, wait, wait, slow down.

71

:

So wait, what you're skipping, blah blah, you know, and it was like, well, they couldn't

do it in a two-hour movie.

72

:

giving every detail that I loved about the book.

73

:

Right.

74

:

And so that was disappointing.

75

:

Right.

76

:

It is a good story.

77

:

It is a good book.

78

:

And I think they did get better at the movie adaptations.

79

:

But the first one I was just dizzied.

80

:

And here as well, I mean, I think they'd if they'd been able to do I, you know, if it had

been a whole season.

81

:

then I I think I would have gotten all of those details and clever little Easter eggs and

all those things that I so look for.

82

:

Instead, this was just breakneck speed.

83

:

And when I w watched it the second time, at least I knew what was coming.

84

:

Yeah.

85

:

And I really appreciated being able to watch it again.

86

:

Yeah.

87

:

Knowing Michael was the instigator of it all.

88

:

But I it just I it was just un I was just left.

89

:

Unsatisfied with the development.

90

:

Again, the cherry on top, fantastic.

91

:

And I think that's what they wanted to give us, honestly.

92

:

Yes.

93

:

And I think that was the only reason we got a season three was so that they could give the

fans that ending.

94

:

So yeah, I mean I I think you know, I'm kinda wondering did and of course this might not

be on the web at all.

95

:

I mean I did try to take a little look, but is that I wondered if it was because of what

96

:

Gaiman was accused of if people had started to like back out.

97

:

Like, I don't know if I want to be in this now.

98

:

I don't want my name associated with one of his properties any more than it already is.

99

:

Um, because there were a ton of people missing that should have shown up in some form or

another, because they were in the first two, right?

100

:

I wrote down, well, of course, John Hamm and Miranda Richardson were a couple of the ones

I really, really missed.

101

:

But

102

:

Or did I write down the woman's name?

103

:

I really missed Miranda Richardson.

104

:

I felt like the John Ham I I wasn't entirely shocked that John Ham and Be Asselbub didn't

return, you know.

105

:

They're living in their own world now.

106

:

But yeah.

107

:

Well that's true.

108

:

But like Nina and Maggie?

109

:

Oh, yeah.

110

:

They, you know, had different characters in the two seasons.

111

:

But I mean, just to kind of write them out.

112

:

And I'm w and so that's why I was kind of wondering if there were some people that it's

like, no, I don't want to do it now.

113

:

I mean, 'cause he's a real c and I don't want my name associated with him anymore.

114

:

I don't know.

115

:

I don't know.

116

:

But yeah, I really missed them.

117

:

I mean, I was happy to see Mrs.

118

:

Sandwich.

119

:

Yes.

120

:

And I was really happy to see Andrew O'Neill, Mrs.

121

:

Mutt, the transgender actor.

122

:

I was glad to see that they were in there.

123

:

So And I was you know, it was nice that the same angels were there.

124

:

Although I was really surprised, you know, in the end in the bar scene, you were seeing

everybody except Sarah Quill.

125

:

Yes, actor that played Sarah Quill.

126

:

I was like, Where, where, where's Liz?

127

:

wonder if she just wasn't available that day.

128

:

That was strange because we got we really got everybody and and I was so glad Derek J

Derek Derek Jacoby was

129

:

Yeah, at least a cameo.

130

:

Yeah.

131

:

Yeah.

132

:

Yeah.

133

:

I mean I I would have been happy just to have you know what, he was on screen three

minutes if that maybe five.

134

:

Well

135

:

Maybe, but but again, in one episode, I mean, there were people we saw less and he was not

just he you know, he got he got erased out of the book of life, but then he got his uh the

136

:

haunting of Scrooge moment and and then was the reason that that A Z went after Crawley at

the end, right?

137

:

Said, Looks like you like him and he likes you, go for it, dude.

138

:

So

139

:

I thought he played an important role, wasn't a ton of time, but neither did the guy who

played the devil, right?

140

:

I forget his name, but he's famous.

141

:

Yeah.

142

:

Yeah.

143

:

The devil and Satan and God, you know, were very brief.

144

:

Yeah.

145

:

I s you know, it's just been nice to have little cameos of the other I mean, I was really

shocked that Miranda Richardson wasn't in it, for sure.

146

:

But you know, whatever it is what it is, I enjoyed it.

147

:

But I've s it it's still it still doesn't mean I'm not upset that we got cheated out of a

full six episodes.

148

:

Yes.

149

:

And I know comparison is the thief of joy, you know.

150

:

I I mean but compared to the previous season, I was robbed of my joy.

151

:

Yes.

152

:

Yeah.

153

:

I mean, I was you know, the first time I watched it I was really upset at the end and

totally unsatisfied.

154

:

Second time I watched it I at least enjoyed it better.

155

:

Mm-hmm.

156

:

But I was still kind of like I was excited that Mark Addy was gonna be in it because I

like Mark Addy.

157

:

yeah.

158

:

Robert Baratheon makes an appearance.

159

:

Yes.

160

:

And I thought it was interesting, you know, that they called him Harry the Fish 'cause he

hung out with Josh Joshua or Jeshua.

161

:

How did how did he say it when he first came into heaven?

162

:

I know it's Jesus who we're talking about, but he didn't call himself Jesus.

163

:

'Cause I think Jesus is actually more of a title, I think.

164

:

Jeshua or Joshua.

165

:

But anyways Yeah, and then, you know, Mark Addy, Harry the Fish, the fisherman, the whole

thing.

166

:

I would have liked to have seen more of his story.

167

:

Right?

168

:

And all we know, which I thought, I do have to admit I did laugh out loud both times I

watched it.

169

:

what does he say?

170

:

How does he say it?

171

:

I know I wrote it down the second time because I was like, nah, I have to remember that

now.

172

:

Okay.

173

:

When he first meets Jesus and they're at that cafe where Maggie and Nina used to be last

season.

174

:

And when Mark Eddy says, I did used to work the Monty with a team of guys, I laughed so

damn loud.

175

:

I'm like, that's a great full Monty reference.

176

:

So I thought that was fun.

177

:

It would have been I don't know.

178

:

It was just that I mean, I thought that was clever.

179

:

It was a nice little Easter egg there.

180

:

But I would have liked to have known more of his story.

181

:

And I did I really enjoyed the scene.

182

:

Jesus was feeding the multitudes with pizza.

183

:

That was my favorite Jesus scene.

184

:

I was I was underwhelmed.

185

:

I was I was underwhelmed by our Lord and Savior.

186

:

Ha ha ha ha.

187

:

But I did absolutely love, oh gosh, I wrote that I wrote it down.

188

:

Oh my gosh.

189

:

yes.

190

:

This when he said this elaborate bread and cheese.

191

:

Was that what he called the pizza?

192

:

That was a great that was perfect how we closed the box.

193

:

And and you know, what I did also like about that scene is

194

:

you know, we just before he's just like this naive, you know, I I'm like, uh.

195

:

But I did love when he was telling people about their loved ones, giving them words of

comfort.

196

:

I could have used more of that earlier, but I realized he'd been woken up after a couple

thousand years.

197

:

He was a little off his game.

198

:

Yes.

199

:

And it was just like he he was very naive and innocent like very childlike.

200

:

And then it was just like snap.

201

:

Yeah.

202

:

He was he had gotten it back, right?

203

:

Like, I know what I'm supposed to say.

204

:

I know what I can do now.

205

:

Yes, that was great.

206

:

uh

207

:

I think I laughed harder at that comment than I did most of this episode.

208

:

Yeah.

209

:

I mean, of course, our main boys had some some great, great lines and great interactions

between the two of them.

210

:

But it just, yeah, it just kind of hurt a little bit because I was like, oh, this could be

this could be so much more.

211

:

But again, loved the entirety.

212

:

And I mean, that's my spotlight scene.

213

:

It's the set of the two last scenes, the scene where

214

:

Crawley comes into the bookshop and the scene twenty years later when they're out looking

at stars and A Z is like, Do you think there's anything else out there?

215

:

And he's like, This is all I've ever wanted.

216

:

I have everything.

217

:

And that I thought was a beautiful capstone to the searching, searching, searching, and

humans deserve a chance.

218

:

And he was kind of and he didn't realize he was kind of advocating for his own future in

this human incarnation.

219

:

So God has a heart.

220

:

Yeah.

221

:

You know, when when God was like, you know, in this new universe, you two can't exist and

blah blah blah blah blah and they're both, you know, willing to give that up and I was

222

:

like, They are not going to do that to us, are they?

223

:

So I was very happy with that end scene.

224

:

But I think I'm gonna give my spotlight scene to actually

225

:

when Crowley, Azirphil, God and Satan are all in the bookstore.

226

:

So right before.

227

:

Mm-hmm.

228

:

And I and I think 'cause it really has one of my favorite lines in it when, you know,

Crowley asks why make people the way they are and then punish them for being people.

229

:

And I love when he said humans are gonna human, you know, no matter what we do.

230

:

And I really liked that.

231

:

You know, those were good questions that they were they gave to him, and I liked that

232

:

their Garden of Eden was set in the bookshop, right?

233

:

And so ever yeah, that whole those last two scenes in total made the episode.

234

:

Not that there weren't other good, decent scenes, but those two really kind of pulled it

all together and made it made me less angry, I guess.

235

:

I should say.

236

:

Yeah, it's almost like they took the time with the last three scenes.

237

:

It was a mad dash.

238

:

They're like, okay, we know exactly where we're ending up and we just need to get them

there.

239

:

And that's kind of what it felt like.

240

:

And then because I too enjoyed the bookstrop scene when a demon, an angel, God, and Satan

walk into a bar.

241

:

Yeah, exactly.

242

:

And I did I mean I loved and it did seem we slowed down a beat, right?

243

:

I liked the appearance of Satan.

244

:

I liked this, you know, I get a bad rap, but I'm just the adversary, you know.

245

:

You can't have good without evil.

246

:

I I, you know, I play my role.

247

:

And I just loved that they sort of book of life God into the scene, just like, yeah,

you're you're you're everywhere.

248

:

And so here you are.

249

:

Yeah.

250

:

And so that was, yes, the last three scenes I found very satisfying.

251

:

But I'm making the last two scenes, my spotlight scene.

252

:

But that's great that your spotlight scene, my spotlight scenes could not have happened

without your spotlight scene because it was the reason for being.

253

:

And I do agree there was some nice philosophy.

254

:

And I love, I loved when AZ was like.

255

:

You were the best of us.

256

:

Yeah.

257

:

You know?

258

:

And I do have to say the depictions of angels, right?

259

:

I mean, they were kind of despicable.

260

:

And Crowley really what everybody else just kind of either towed the line or was resentful

or whatever, or was kind of like vengeful.

261

:

And, you know, I mean, I mean, God described A Z with like three of the deadly sins.

262

:

Like sloth, gluttony, and pride or something, you know?

263

:

Yes.

264

:

Yeah.

265

:

And here's this virtuous artist that, yeah, a bit of a hedonist, I suppose, you know, but

fighting for the little guy, man, you know.

266

:

So I I really think an argument could be made that Crawley is the best of the angels.

267

:

But it wasn't like he had great competition, if I'm honest.

268

:

This is true.

269

:

This is true.

270

:

Yeah, I liked you know, you were mentioning when God was calling a Zeraphel lazy,

gluttonous, and prideful.

271

:

And he's like, Well, that doesn't negate my wanting to do good.

272

:

You know I was like, that's a really great thing.

273

:

Yeah, there's a whole lot of philosophy there about th free will and what does it really

mean and if there is this great plan, then there really isn't free will and

274

:

And that's the full Monty thing.

275

:

Or not the full Monty, but the three card Monty thing, right?

276

:

Which I thought was really interesting.

277

:

And a nice little thread throughout the whole the whole episode.

278

:

So yeah, I just thought that was really interesting.

279

:

And and part of me was like, you know, Satan was like, I just, you know, I did my job, but

then at the same time trying to

280

:

say he wasn't just this puppet character that God created.

281

:

And I'm like, dude, you're just contradicting yourself here.

282

:

Yeah.

283

:

So all of that was very kind of fascinating to me.

284

:

Speaking of contradictions, Michael says, no one ever thanked me.

285

:

Guess what happens in one of the first scenes of the movie?

286

:

Zurfel thanks her.

287

:

And so the whole never once in all eternity have I been thanked, it was like, but it like

happened five minutes ago.

288

:

I didn't catch that.

289

:

Huh.

290

:

Well, you know, according to Crowley, right, having the book was would drive anybody mad

because it's too much power for anybody, so probably had already started the plan prior to

291

:

them starting the second coming.

292

:

Evidently that took a few years to plan.

293

:

To put into action.

294

:

Yeah.

295

:

Michael I mean, watching it the second time, knowing it's Michael, the seeds are laid from

the beginning.

296

:

Yeah.

297

:

Right.

298

:

And I mean, she's the one that offers to look for the missing book and brings along the

Keystone cop, you know.

299

:

Yes.

300

:

So yeah.

301

:

And I was like, well, would Muriel really have figured that out?

302

:

I don't know.

303

:

I don't know.

304

:

Well, I liked is it Saraquel?

305

:

I always forget how to pronounce Saraquiel.

306

:

Sarah Saraquiel who figured out it was Michael because she was like, You're too stupid.

307

:

You're too bl I know it wasn't me.

308

:

My process of elimination, given him who is dead and gone, it's gotta be Michael.

309

:

Yeah.

310

:

Reminds me of that Shakespeare quote, Hell is empty and all the devil devils are here.

311

:

Heaven was empty.

312

:

It was like five people.

313

:

Five people were left to leave the lights on, you know.

314

:

Yeah.

315

:

You know, I would have loved to have seen more of Liz Carr a Saraquel.

316

:

yeah.

317

:

There was just a lot of people I would have liked to have seen more of.

318

:

And I mean, yeah, I mean they just dropped in some characters like the gangster.

319

:

I was like, where have I seen that guy?

320

:

What have I seen that guy in?

321

:

Brian Cameron.

322

:

that was the character name.

323

:

Sean Petweet is the actor.

324

:

I was remembering him from Gotham.

325

:

And he played Alfred, Bruce Wayne's butler.

326

:

That's the only thing I've seen him in.

327

:

Yeah, I feel like I've definitely seen him in something else.

328

:

he was in Event Horizon.

329

:

I did see that.

330

:

Yeah.

331

:

Yeah, I did not I didn't get I didn't get too much from that storyline with the daughter.

332

:

Oh, of course he's Alfred in Gotham.

333

:

Of course, of course.

334

:

Yeah, that's definitely where I'm

335

:

remembering him from too.

336

:

he was an episode of Death in Paradise.

337

:

Huh.

338

:

But I'm sure it's I'm sure it's Alfred that is in my head.

339

:

Yeah.

340

:

I I I loved the Queen music.

341

:

That was a lot of fun.

342

:

I loved the role of the car and the reprisal of the plant.

343

:

Yes.

344

:

My buddy's down to one and it's not looking very healthy.

345

:

No, no.

346

:

No.

347

:

Yeah.

348

:

The two queen songs I read I'm like Queen for every occasion.

349

:

Yeah.

350

:

Amazing.

351

:

Well that that that car can do anything.

352

:

That's quite a car.

353

:

Those Bentleys, wow.

354

:

Wow, wow, wow.

355

:

So in terms of Shining Star, for me it has to be one of the two.

356

:

Yeah.

357

:

And I just have to give it to David Tennant.

358

:

I think they both do a great job but Crowley just has that that portrayal has just

endeared itself to me since day one.

359

:

I just can't I just can't go anybody but David Tennant on that one.

360

:

I would say overall I would agree with you.

361

:

But I do wanna give at least a shout out to Michael Sheen for his portrayal of what was

that demon's name?

362

:

Lord something.

363

:

With this message,

364

:

Comedic thing.

365

:

Yeah, I was like, it was like a mix of the Joker and the penguin.

366

:

And I was like, what the hell did he do?

367

:

But that w you know, hats off.

368

:

That was funny.

369

:

Yes.

370

:

It was.

371

:

and he had some great lines through I mean, he's a close second for me.

372

:

He has uh qualities.

373

:

Love the our car, his car.

374

:

Yes.

375

:

Yeah.

376

:

Yeah.

377

:

I liked when they came down and they're in the bookstore talking finally and you know,

Azarephel's trying to figure out who's responsible and says it has to be hell because

378

:

angels aren't killers.

379

:

And you just very quickly hear Crowley go, Are we talking about the same angels?

380

:

And then it's pretty soon right after that, where he goes where Azapel goes to hell with

Muriel, but

381

:

I also love when Azuraph's like a master I'm a master of Crowley's like, no, you're not.

382

:

And here I have it written down.

383

:

Archduke Slorch the Vile is who he's playing, who's the master of the secret torments.

384

:

It was incredible.

385

:

Yeah, that was funny.

386

:

And I I'm glad to see at least a couple of familiar figures in Hell.

387

:

We had that rabbit eared demon and Dagon was back again.

388

:

So at least there was a little bit of continuity there because hell looked pretty empty.

389

:

Hell is empty and all the devils are here.

390

:

No, you're you're right.

391

:

Both hell and heaven seemed pretty cleared out.

392

:

They both were really running the skeleton crew.

393

:

Yeah.

394

:

Well, I mean I guess we don't know how long Michael had the book.

395

:

So Michael could have been, you know, off in everybody or undoing them as she said.

396

:

And they really were playing up that whole it wouldn't take you long to not remember that

they even existed.

397

:

That she would be the only one who could keep it all in her head.

398

:

I did like that.

399

:

Oh, there goes Canada.

400

:

I really did like that imagery, you know, this idea of this book.

401

:

And as soon as the page was ripped out and destroyed, that

402

:

that no longer exist.

403

:

It was just kind of a cool it was a cool image.

404

:

Yeah.

405

:

For sure.

406

:

While you were saying that though, it made me start made me think about the eternal flame.

407

:

So I'm gonna jump all the way back to the beginning of the episode.

408

:

Yes.

409

:

When we're seeing the war from heaven.

410

:

Yes.

411

:

And we're at the eternal flame and a zero fail is there.

412

:

Give me your hand.

413

:

Can you feel my heart beating?

414

:

D are you familiar?

415

:

I know the song.

416

:

Was it in the second?

417

:

you understand?

418

:

Do you feel I'm I'm afraid it's gonna take a little while.

419

:

Is this burning?

420

:

An eternal flame.

421

:

Yes.

422

:

But when Azarophil was standing there, I was like, he's giving me Legolus gone heavily

into drinking drugs vibes.

423

:

uh

424

:

Nice.

425

:

If Legolas turned to vice, that's what he would have looked like.

426

:

Yeah, right, right, right build, right bone structure.

427

:

Yeah, I'm right there with you.

428

:

I I also boy, it was a real dark this eternal flame was in a real dark place.

429

:

It kind of reminded me of that big forge in the Marvel movies that Peter Dinklage was what

did he forge the the hammer for Thor or something?

430

:

Not the hammer well he did the ax you're thinking about we that's the one we saw, the axe

being forged, so yeah.

431

:

Yeah.

432

:

Kinda remind me of that spot.

433

:

The the turtle flame was like the forge there.

434

:

It's so dark.

435

:

So dark.

436

:

Yeah.

437

:

And and in like a pagoda.

438

:

Yeah.

439

:

The eternal flame pagoda

440

:

Yes, yes.

441

:

Did you wonder though, you know, when Crowley shows up in that scene, they seem to not

remember meeting at the point when Crowley w is working with God and designing things.

442

:

They don't seem to remember each other from that moment.

443

:

Which is weird to me.

444

:

Yeah.

445

:

I was like, you guys have already met.

446

:

Shouldn't they have already met?

447

:

Wait a second.

448

:

Maybe they haven't.

449

:

No, no, no, they have.

450

:

Because the whole battle is over man.

451

:

So man has to already be.

452

:

Yeah.

453

:

So it had yeah, they had already met at least once.

454

:

I guess, you know, they just forgot.

455

:

I don't know.

456

:

getting thanked.

457

:

I j I think there was some con I mean this was this seemed to have gotten slapped together

a little bit.

458

:

Again, break neck speed to the last two scenes.

459

:

Yeah, yeah.

460

:

Nothing to see here.

461

:

Let's just get to this.

462

:

Let's just get to this ending.

463

:

It was like we had all of this build up for the Antichrist, right?

464

:

And then Jesus Jesus just waltz in in two minutes and then is gone in two minutes more.

465

:

Come to me all those who are Yeah, it was funny.

466

:

But I did like I mean, even in that first scene, I mean they kind of sum up the whole

premise of the show.

467

:

When Crowley says, I have a lot of questions and nobody ever has the answers.

468

:

And then, you know, even after Crowley takes Azaraphel's flaming sword, which didn't look

too flame.

469

:

No, that's

470

:

Gotta stick it back in the eternal flame, get it a little

471

:

Yeah, I guess.

472

:

But, you know, he still gives Crowley aid.

473

:

I mean, they still have that connection, you know, and Crowley gives him back the sword

without really doing anything.

474

:

And so I I so like the premise of the whole show is there, right?

475

:

Crowley has questions that nobody ever answers, big existential questions, but at this

core is this relationship built on love and and real friendship between.

476

:

these two individuals.

477

:

And then so I like that they they threw that out there right away.

478

:

And then we you know, we get back to that at the very end.

479

:

So it was a nice bookend for this 90 minute episode.

480

:

So so yeah, but I I think I might have missed some of that the first time, but I caught

more of that kind of stuff when I was watching it the second time.

481

:

You know, I was like, well they've just kind of summed up

482

:

The whole premise of the entire series right there.

483

:

Mm-hmm.

484

:

So I think with that in mind, they had to have Curly and Azerophil be together at the end

because it would have undermined the whole premise of the series.

485

:

So anyhow.

486

:

Yes, and I did like that they were mortal.

487

:

You know.

488

:

You know, they had an eternity to get together as angels.

489

:

And as humans, not so, you know.

490

:

You miss your you miss your one shot and it's

491

:

And they, you know, they probably only had maybe like 20, 30 years together because they

don't meet until they're in their late forties or early fifties.

492

:

So I loved when Derek Jacobby's like, Are you gonna go after him?

493

:

You like him and I think he liked you.

494

:

Yeah.

495

:

Yeah, it was very important.

496

:

I I d don't know that A Z would have done it without him, you know?

497

:

Yeah.

498

:

So that yeah.

499

:

I I liked that the voice of God.

500

:

It as his former as his former calling may have been.

501

:

Yeah.

502

:

You know, and I halfway expected that Francis McDormand was gonna pop up as God.

503

:

So I was a little disappointed when that didn't happen.

504

:

I'm like, man, that would've just been cherry on top.

505

:

That would have been great.

506

:

That would have been great.

507

:

Yeah.

508

:

But yeah, I mean again, just can't can't call it out with as much praise as the previous

seasons, but very glad, very glad to have had it and very glad to be able to put these

509

:

characters, you know, kind of at their at their final place.

510

:

And it's it's I'm satisfied.

511

:

I guess I'm I'm satisfied.

512

:

And it you know, it's not every show that kind of sticks the landing.

513

:

Well, far from many shows, stick the landing.

514

:

But it kind of a kind of a shaky way to get to that landing.

515

:

But then wow.

516

:

Okay.

517

:

Yeah.

518

:

You you landed it.

519

:

It was a crash landing.

520

:

It was a crash landing.

521

:

But everybody Scully managed to land the plane in the Hudson and the people were safe.

522

:

First when you said Scully, I thought you were gonna do some X Files reference, but I'm

like, Oh Scully I think it's Sully.

523

:

Oops.

524

:

Well, uh d d the X Files made it in there because I I called him Scully.

525

:

Yeah.

526

:

You know, it's kind of weird.

527

:

I mean, this is all set in heaven and so forth, but there were just like many biblical

references that I thought and I don't know exactly what they are, but I felt like there

528

:

should have been more like biblical stuff in it.

529

:

I mean, I like when Jesus comes and he's like, Where's Gabriel?

530

:

Which I didn't think the comment was like, it wasn't that helpful, but he talked about

himself a lot.

531

:

Yeah.

532

:

Was funny, right?

533

:

Because that fits with this Gabriel.

534

:

And I liked that he doesn't call him Crowley because he doesn't know, but you know, now in

the lore of good omens, Crowley is the angel who was with Jesus in the desert for 40 days

535

:

and temptied him, right?

536

:

And and I thought that was interesting because it was like a reference, but they didn't

put it in biblical terms.

537

:

They're like, He showed me all these cities.

538

:

And I was like, wait a minute.

539

:

I had to go I had to go look that up to make sure I was thinking about that correctly.

540

:

And I guess I just missed not having a bunch of stuff to go look up.

541

:

Yes, agreed.

542

:

And I I I loved I love that Jesus had like a positive, positive memory of the temptation.

543

:

You know, that was not, you know, not necessarily supposed to be such a such a good

memory.

544

:

But he's he's like, Hey, that dude was cool.

545

:

I'd like to see him again.

546

:

Yeah, you know, we had so much fun digging into the four horsemen and all of that.

547

:

And it was just sort of the second

548

:

Coming was a real hint with not with a bang but a whimper, you know, was a real

interesting.

549

:

Yeah.

550

:

And I'll tell you, I really got Thanos snap vibes from people just sort of evaporated.

551

:

out of existence in this case, but

552

:

Yeah, and kind of uh disintegrating.

553

:

You know, it started as when they first showed us a Metatron getting zapped out of

existence.

554

:

It was very ashy, but then he ended up like very sparkly.

555

:

Yes.

556

:

Yeah.

557

:

like, oh, okay.

558

:

We're gonna go out of existence in a bunch of sparkles.

559

:

There's a very popular video game that came out in the last year called Claire Obscure.

560

:

And it has this thing called the gommage.

561

:

I won't get into the whole plot, but these people as soon as they turn a certain age, they

they turn into flower petals and blow away.

562

:

And so and it really reminded me of that.

563

:

It this this was a again, this is a a lot of people know what this is because this was a

very, very popular game.

564

:

What of words?

565

:

liked when particularly when we saw Sandal Fawn and then Uriel gets zapped and you know we

see them um almost like these chalk drawings but I love then that the wings were shown and

566

:

that really gave me supernatural vibes because in the later seasons when angels get

killed, you know, they look like humans, but when they die, it's like it's almost like

567

:

this bright light explodes them.

568

:

And like then their shadow is like w on a wall or on the ground or something, but it

always shows their massive wings.

569

:

Yeah, that's cool.

570

:

That's

571

:

So I got those vibes from that.

572

:

So I really appreciated that.

573

:

I like the art too.

574

:

I thought it was it was really well done.

575

:

And I just want to give a shout out to the actress playing Uri Uriel.

576

:

Who was that?

577

:

Not sure I wrote it down, but I have IMDB up here.

578

:

Uriel, Uriel.

579

:

Gloria Obiano.

580

:

yes.

581

:

She didn't have a ton of lines, but that whole scene

582

:

Towards the beginning when all the angel names were trying to come out at the same time.

583

:

When Zeraphels like, go do your jobs, and they're all walking out, and Michael and Muriel,

Sandalfon and Uriel are all walking out together, and Michael's like complimenting Muriel

584

:

on stuff.

585

:

And the looks

586

:

that Uriel kept giving Michael throughout the whole thing until she got zapped out.

587

:

Yeah.

588

:

Were great.

589

:

I mean, her expressions were telling big stories.

590

:

Mm-hmm.

591

:

And so shout out to her.

592

:

I thought that was really good.

593

:

I mean, heaven is sort of like corporate America.

594

:

I mean, it's like, you know, middle management and, you know, bickering amongst people

divide oh, I'm now the under secretary instead of the oversecretary.

595

:

You know, it's just like, geez.

596

:

I don't want to be there.

597

:

Yeah.

598

:

Yeah.

599

:

I appreciated the little call outs to the earlier two seasons, right?

600

:

Like when Uriel flicks the list and it's just like this super long thing like we saw.

601

:

Um was that in season two or season one?

602

:

It doesn't matter.

603

:

Doesn't matter, Tori.

604

:

But there's that I think it's season two, the really long list of stuff that just goes

over and over all these sand dunes and stuff.

605

:

So I mean there were little things like that that I thought

606

:

were nice little touches.

607

:

Could've used more.

608

:

Mm-hmm.

609

:

Since we weren't gonna have all six episodes that could have done some more l Easter egg

throwbacks to the earlier ones.

610

:

And I'm sure there probably were some in there that I just missed.

611

:

I'm sure too, because I was like, gosh, do I need to watch the first two seasons in

preparation for this?

612

:

And you know, if it had been a whole season, I might have.

613

:

But I was kind of like, let's see how it is.

614

:

I did listen to a few of our podcast episodes from season one.

615

:

Well, you can tell those are our first episodes.

616

:

I think we've come a long way, baby.

617

:

uh

618

:

I love it.

619

:

yeah.

620

:

I thought it was a little too on the nose to have Cindy Lopper's time after time playing

when they were in the restaurant having their first date.

621

:

my gosh.

622

:

I it's true, but there are some lyrics in there that really were pretty darn perfect.

623

:

But yeah, it was a little it was a little time after time.

624

:

Did you recognize the guy in the portrait?

625

:

No.

626

:

I was like, I feel like I should.

627

:

So I like that.

628

:

That was a nice little touch.

629

:

And there's even a picture of him and it looks like a a like oversized brim black cowboy

hat.

630

:

So it was even kind of referenced in that painting.

631

:

I love that, you know, he was holding that kind of mystical pouch in his hand that had a

universes in it, right?

632

:

Yeah.

633

:

And I'm like, that's that was great little shout out and nice memorial to Terry Pratchett.

634

:

Yes, yes.

635

:

I'm so glad you knew that.

636

:

Uh it was like I feel like I should know this dude.

637

:

I feel like I should know what's this is clearly intentional.

638

:

Yeah, and I was like, God, that guy looks familiar.

639

:

Who is he supposed to be?

640

:

So I mean it is something I had to look up.

641

:

I didn't know it right off the top of my head, but And I love, you know, we got the

reference back with the nightingale.

642

:

So there's another one of those little Easter eggs, which was nice.

643

:

Yes, over one of their meals together, right?

644

:

We have several

645

:

That's from episode or season one, the whole Nightingale references.

646

:

So that was cool.

647

:

Yeah.

648

:

I just love that the ending.

649

:

They did nail the ending.

650

:

I love that the Adirondack chairs from the back look like a big one big heart.

651

:

Yeah.

652

:

Yeah, that that was just such a cool scene.

653

:

I I think it was a good choice, but it's just an interesting choice to make Tony Anthony

Crowley a an astrophysicist, right?

654

:

I mean, and that's that's cool, you know, because of Crowley's, you know, but I really do

see Crowley the way AZ talked about him as an artist, right?

655

:

And so I didn't quite get that.

656

:

He clearly had now.

657

:

It's totally fine.

658

:

Again, I'm not upset at the choice at all.

659

:

Thirst for knowledge, wanting to understand, asking a lot of questions.

660

:

The astrophysics physicist is probably the better choice.

661

:

But you know, I guess maybe if he also had a little art gig on the side or something.

662

:

I mean, maybe I just kind of wanted to see a little bit of that artistic piece, the

creation that he created, not just asked questions.

663

:

But I think the more important thing was highlighted.

664

:

Maybe that's why they made him a writer.

665

:

Right?

666

:

Like he wrote a book for the masses, astrophysics for everybody, right?

667

:

That apparently didn't do very well, so I don't know that it was for everybody.

668

:

But tough sell.

669

:

Tough soul.

670

:

I did love I did love start with a big bang and to the inevitable heat death and and

Crowley's like the heat death isn't a deal breaker, you know.

671

:

That is not the way the universe ends.

672

:

Yeah.

673

:

We're pretty sure about the beginning, but a little sketchier on the end.

674

:

Yeah, yeah.

675

:

I didn't kiss in this episode though.

676

:

You know, they did the little in the very last episode of season two.

677

:

Maybe it was just too weird as good friends like that.

678

:

And right in front of God and Satan.

679

:

Right in front of God and

680

:

already had it in that scene at the end when they were sitting out watching the stars.

681

:

did have them hold hands though and maybe that's all that was needed was that it you could

see there were rings, right?

682

:

And so you you knew the intimacy was there.

683

:

It they just didn't have to show it.

684

:

I was okay with that.

685

:

I was okay with it because of what we did get.

686

:

Yes That was cute.

687

:

Yeah.

688

:

Yeah, I would have been really angry if they hadn't ended up together.

689

:

Yeah.

690

:

Like from Dracula, I have crossed oceans of time to find

691

:

Deal.

692

:

But nice, nicely done.

693

:

Nicely done.

694

:

I'm not sure if I have whole much whole much.

695

:

Whole much else to say Much else to say.

696

:

Yeah, let me just kind of look over my notes a bit.

697

:

I didn't I uh I really liked Satan.

698

:

God was fine.

699

:

I wasn't blown away by God, and I thought she was rather uh kind of an asshole.

700

:

You want me to create a godless universe?

701

:

But she goes for it.

702

:

You know, it does seem like and and I would imagine if you are the smartest thing going,

you get a little bored, you know, I think.

703

:

Supreme Being, yeah.

704

:

Yeah, I I guess anything the Supreme Being says to lesser beings is gonna be kind of

condescending.

705

:

Your love for him.

706

:

Made me smile.

707

:

Yeah.

708

:

Ouch.

709

:

Ouch.

710

:

I did I did like Jesus' line 'cause I do think this is from the Bible.

711

:

Well, the trans translation of it anyway.

712

:

Into your hands I commit my spirit again.

713

:

Again.

714

:

I never get much of a go round.

715

:

Yeah.

716

:

Yeah.

717

:

So yeah, Jesus Jesus grew on me.

718

:

Jesus did grow on me.

719

:

At first I was like, what the heck?

720

:

Yeah, the whole white eyed doe thing didn't work for me.

721

:

No.

722

:

no.

723

:

I kind of wanted a deeper wisdom.

724

:

I d liked when he snapped into it, you know, and started doing it.

725

:

So there was there was that payoff.

726

:

So that was good.

727

:

Yeah.

728

:

The only the only other question I have is why do you think when Curly was in heaven they

gave him Bride of Frankenstein hair?

729

:

my God.

730

:

You know, the only thing I could come up with is right before he went there, he was

holding those two ice cream cones that he then kind of threw behind his.

731

:

But but you're right, it happened both times.

732

:

And so I don't know if that was supposed to be his disguise, but it didn't look like he

cared about being disguised.

733

:

He was just like, dude, I'm here.

734

:

I'm here, deal with it.

735

:

Yeah.

736

:

That yeah, whatever.

737

:

I was like, does is that what he always look I mean, the clothes look kind of reminiscent

of what he had on before, but I don't remember the hair, but whatever.

738

:

Whatever.

739

:

But yeah, we've s we've successfully talked for at least half the length of the entire the

entire episode.

740

:

Yeah.

741

:

just Yeah.

742

:

So yeah.

743

:

We got we we got the scenes we wanted.

744

:

And you know, would I have preferred if it was an incredible hour and 20 minutes, and then

the last 10 minutes made me angry and I thought the landing was terrible.

745

:

I think I picked this.

746

:

It wasn't terrible.

747

:

Yeah.

748

:

And again, it's not that it was a bad episode or anything like that.

749

:

It's just rushed, it felt rushed.

750

:

And it and I think it all comes down, it's like we we gotta get something out.

751

:

We've already told people we've got a season.

752

:

But we got so we gotta do something.

753

:

So

754

:

Yeah.

755

:

Yeah, we were really gearing up for this season.

756

:

And and when I saw that it was one episode and I text you, I was like, Are are you aware

that this is this is all we're getting?

757

:

Yeah.

758

:

Last night I just watched for the first time the most recent Emma.

759

:

Oh I haven't seen it.

760

:

And I was prepared to dislike it intensely because it is one of my least favorite Austin

books.

761

:

And I thought they did a really good job with it.

762

:

I was shocked at the end of it.

763

:

I was like, Well, I it wasn't half bad.

764

:

Any better

765

:

quitting this.

766

:

This way better than going to the Paltros, Emma.

767

:

Although it didn't score very high, I did which I isn't saying too much, Emma, but I

thought they did a pretty good job.

768

:

Again, I didn't I didn't rage quit it, as you said.

769

:

And at the end of it I was like, Wow, that wasn't half bad.

770

:

wasn't bad.

771

:

And and I again, high praise.

772

:

From from me, yeah.

773

:

Yeah.

774

:

So this was the twenty twenty version.

775

:

Okay.

776

:

So I thought the actress who played I'm no I'm going off on a whole nother podcast.

777

:

This is Rebecca.

778

:

Today we're talking about

779

:

Ha ha ha.

780

:

I'm like, Dory, stop, stop, stop, stop.

781

:

So

782

:

T pod at gmail.com if you'd like us to talk about 2020's Emma.

783

:

Alrighty.

784

:

Well, maybe on that note, all we have to do is say goodbye.

785

:

Thanks for listening, everybody.

786

:

What is hell is actually behind this?

787

:

Someone must have had a motive for the theft.

788

:

A motive for the murder?

789

:

It wasn't you, and we know it wasn't me.

790

:

And angels aren't killers.

791

:

Sorry, we're talking about the same angels.

792

:

I think you should return to hell and find out everything you can.

793

:

They know me, I'm not going back.

794

:

They know you.

795

:

But they don't know me.

796

:

I could ask around, take a look.

797

:

You are not a demon.

798

:

They found an undocumented angel wandering round hell.

799

:

They'd kill you just for starters.

800

:

You forget.

801

:

I am a master of disguise.

802

:

No, you're not.

803

Profile picture for Rebecca B

Rebecca B

Rebecca has always appreciated nerdy and cult-classic media such as Star Trek (in all its iterations), Star Wars (leaning toward the early stuff), Battlestar Galactica, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and so on. She has also been a huge fan of Fantasy content like Lord of the Rings, Piers Anthony, The Wheel of Time, Game of Thrones, and many others. She is relatively new to Marvel content and the world of Buffy, but she is enjoying the ride. She loves to talk about ALL of the above and could not be more thrilled to do so with her long time friend and often partner in crime, Tori.

Tori is a life-long tv and movie fan, growing up with classics such as Gilligan's Island, Lost in Space, M*A*S*H, and movie musicals. Alas, she never got into "fandom," which is probably because her mom wouldn't buy her the teen mags needed to be a super fan back in the day. Now, this Pacific Northwest transplant is trying to rectify this by chatting television and movies with her intrepid friend, Rebecca.
